Assam witnessed a marginal improvement in its flood situation on Tuesday, with no fresh casualties reported over the past 24 hours. However, the crisis continues to affect more than 4.45 lakh people across six districts, while relief and rescue operations remain in full swing, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Relief as Death Toll Remains Unchanged
Officials said no new flood-related deaths were recorded during the last 24 hours, keeping this year’s flood death toll at 68. While the situation has shown signs of easing compared to previous days, thousands of families continue to struggle with inundated villages, damaged infrastructure and displacement.
Until Sunday, over 5.24 lakh people were affected across the state, indicating a gradual decline in the number of affected residents.
Charaideo Continues to Be the Worst-Hit District
According to ASDMA, floodwaters continue to impact 4,45,495 people in the districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metropolitan).
Among them, Charaideo remains the worst-affected district with 1,88,404 people impacted, followed by Sivasagar (1,44,461) and Jorhat (74,458).
Relief Camps and Rescue Operations Continue
Authorities said 90 relief camps are currently sheltering 28,695 displaced people, while 94 relief distribution centres are providing essential supplies to affected residents.
Rescue operations are being carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and civil defence teams. A total of 67 boats have been deployed in flood-hit areas to assist evacuation and relief efforts.
The Dhansiri (South) River continues to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, keeping local authorities on alert.
Crops, Livestock and Infrastructure Suffer Heavy Losses
The floods have caused extensive damage to agriculture and public infrastructure across the affected districts.
Officials said 37,139.52 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged, while 26,679 livestock animals have been washed away. Damage to roads, residential buildings and public infrastructure has also been reported from several flood-affected areas.
Congress Demands Long-Term Flood Solution
Reacting to the situation, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi expressed solidarity with the flood-affected people and urged both the Union and Assam governments to strengthen relief efforts.
In a post on X, Kharge said: “Deeply distressed by the devastating floods in Assam, which have claimed at least 68 precious lives and caused immense suffering and destruction across the State. Almost 10 lakh people across 25 districts were affected.”
He urged the Centre to release substantial assistance from the PM-CARES Fund and ensure adequate compensation for families that have lost lives, homes, crops and livelihoods.
Kharge also questioned the BJP over its earlier promises of providing a permanent solution to Assam’s recurring flood problem, asking why a comprehensive flood-control and rehabilitation system has not yet been implemented after years in office.
