The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a fresh spell of widespread monsoon activity across large parts of the country, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds in several states from July 28 to August 2. The weather department said a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify rainfall across northern, central, eastern and northeastern India over the coming days.
Along with intense showers, the IMD has warned of gusty winds ranging between 40 and 70 kmph and lightning at isolated places, advising people to remain cautious, particularly in flood-prone and hilly regions.
Delhi-NCR Likely to Receive Fresh Spell of Rain
The national capital is expected to remain under cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall during the day, bringing some relief from high temperatures while humidity is likely to persist. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 34°C.
Neighbouring areas, including Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad, are likely to witness heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds through July 31. Authorities have also cautioned commuters in Gurugram to prepare for possible waterlogging and traffic disruptions during periods of intense rainfall.
Heavy Rain Forecast for Several States
According to the IMD, multiple states are likely to experience significant rainfall over the next few days:
- Uttar Pradesh: Heavy to very heavy rain is expected across several districts, including Meerut, Prayagraj, Agra, Jhansi, Bareilly and Mirzapur.
- Bihar: Widespread rainfall with heavy showers has been forecast for Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Purnia and Bhagalpur.
- Rajasthan: Both eastern and western parts of the state, including Jaipur, Kota, Udaipur, Ajmer and Jodhpur, are likely to receive heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
- Jharkhand: Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Bokaro are expected to witness intermittent rain, thunderstorms and lightning.
- Jammu and Kashmir: Heavy rainfall along with strong winds and lightning is likely in Srinagar, Jammu, Poonch, Rajouri and Udhampur between July 29 and August 2.
Hill States Face Flash Flood, Landslide Risk
The IMD has placed parts of Uttarakhand under red and orange alerts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in districts such as Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli and Pithoragarh. The weather department has cautioned that vulnerable areas could face flash floods and landslides.
Neighbouring Himachal Pradesh is also expected to receive very heavy rainfall, particularly in Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra and Chamba, where authorities have been advised to remain prepared for weather-related emergencies.
The IMD has urged residents in affected regions to stay updated with official advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and exercise caution in areas susceptible to flooding and landslides.
