New Delhi: In a chilling development, radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh Mehron has openly claimed responsibility for the murder of Punjabi influencer Kamal Kaur, also known as Kanchan Kumari. In a video circulating on social media, Mehron alleged that the killing was a direct consequence of Kaur’s “disrespect” towards Sikhism and accused her of misusing the sacred name ‘Kaur’ to circulate vulgar content online.
“Khalsa never attacks women, but when someone disrespects our Takhts and ridicules Sikh principles, there will be consequences,” said Mehron, addressing his followers in Punjabi. He further warned content creators that anyone seen “crossing limits” in the name of freedom of expression would not be spared.
Kamal Kaur, a popular Instagram personality from Ludhiana with over 3.8 lakh followers, was known for her outspoken and often controversial content. Her videos had previously drawn the ire of several religious factions and even attracted threats from gangsters operating abroad. On the night of June 12, Kaur’s body was discovered in a locked car parked outside Adesh Medical University in Bathinda. The vehicle, reportedly registered in Ludhiana, raised suspicions after locals noticed a foul smell and alerted authorities.
Bathinda police confirmed that two Nihang Sikhs have been arrested in connection with the case. Investigations are ongoing to establish their potential ties with Mehron and any larger conspiracy behind the murder.
“The exact cause of death and location where the act occurred is still under investigation,” a senior police official told reporters. “Preliminary evidence suggests the crime did not happen at the location where the body was found. The registration number on the car may be fake, and we are working to identify the original ownership.”
Authorities are currently scanning CCTV footage from multiple areas in Bathinda and Ludhiana to track Kaur’s last known movements. According to her family, she left Ludhiana on June 9 to attend an event in Bathinda and had since gone incommunicado.
Police have also confirmed that Kaur had reported receiving online threats in the past, though she reportedly did not seek formal protection. Her provocative social media presence had made her a target of both cultural critics and fringe elements.
