A security scare was reported at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) after two men were detained by police shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to attend an event at the venue.
According to Mumbai Police, one of the men allegedly attempted to gain access to the premises by using a fake identity card. The situation became more serious when officers discovered that the man was accompanied by a bodyguard who was allegedly carrying a firearm.
The incident occurred on September 7, a day before Prime Minister Modi’s scheduled appearance at the NMACC for the inauguration of the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026.
Man allegedly posed as PMO official
Police identified the main accused as Rohan Parekh, who was reportedly carrying forged identity documents when he arrived at the NMACC.
During a security check, police officers became suspicious of Parekh and stopped him for further verification. The documents in his possession were subsequently found to be fake, according to the police.
Earlier information released by the police had also indicated that Parekh allegedly claimed to be associated with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) while attempting to enter the high-security venue.
His movements reportedly raised further suspicion among security personnel. During the subsequent checking, officers also found that his bodyguard was carrying a gun.
The discovery of a firearm and the alleged use of forged identification prompted authorities to take immediate action and detain both men.
Armed bodyguard adds to security concerns
The presence of an armed individual accompanying a person allegedly using a fake identity created an additional security concern because of the timing and location of the incident.
The NMACC was preparing to host a major event that was scheduled to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With several high-profile guests expected at the venue, security arrangements had been tightened ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival.
Following the incident, the BKC Police Station registered a case against Parekh and his bodyguard. Both individuals were taken into custody for questioning as investigators began examining how they managed to approach the venue and what they intended to do there.
Police are particularly looking into the origin and purpose of the allegedly forged identity documents and the reason for the bodyguard carrying a firearm.
Crime Branch takes over investigation
The Mumbai Crime Branch is now investigating the matter in greater detail.
As part of the probe, investigators are examining the mobile phones and identity documents recovered from the accused. Other belongings in their possession are also being scrutinised as officers attempt to establish their movements and determine their purpose for visiting the venue.
Investigators are also questioning the two men about their alleged claims of being connected with the Prime Minister’s Office and their attempt to enter the NMACC using the disputed identification documents.
At this stage, the allegations against the accused remain subject to investigation. Police are expected to determine whether the fake documents were prepared specifically for entry into the venue and whether there was any larger motive behind the attempt.
Further legal action will follow based on the findings of the investigation, Mumbai Police said.
PM Modi scheduled to inaugurate Global Fintech Fest 2026
The security incident came ahead of the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate at the NMACC in Mumbai.
GFF is positioned as a major international gathering focused on financial technology, digital finance and emerging technologies. The 2026 edition is being held under the theme “Potential to Impact: Agentic AI, Tokenisation, Quantum – Trusted, Connected, Global Systems for Inclusive Finance.”
The four-day event is expected to bring together representatives from the financial sector, technology companies, policymakers, investors and other stakeholders.
The detention of the two men has therefore added another layer of security attention around the high-profile event, with Mumbai Police and other security agencies maintaining heightened vigilance around the venue.
