A social media dispute involving BJP leader and spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia and leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has escalated into a legal battle, with Bhatia approaching the Delhi High Court with a defamation suit seeking ₹2 crore in damages.
Bhatia announced the legal action on Tuesday, September 8, saying the case against CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka would come up for hearing before the Delhi High Court. The BJP leader said he had chosen the legal route instead of continuing the confrontation on social media.
In a post on X, Bhatia said, “When allegations cross the line, the law draws its line. A defamation suit of ₹2 crore. Tomorrow, this defamation case will be listed for hearing before the Honorable Delhi High Court. No social media trial. No war of words. Only facts, evidence, and the rule of law. The truth will be tested where it should be – in court.”
What is the controversy involving Gaurav Bhatia and CJP leaders?
The dispute reportedly began on September 5, when CJP leader Saurav Das shared a graphic featuring Gaurav Bhatia.
The graphic attributed a controversial statement to Bhatia about Swatantrata Bhardwaj, describing him as a “mentally challenged Naxalite” and alleging that he was “filled with casteist venom” and had no connection with the BJP government.
Bhatia subsequently rejected the graphic and the statement attributed to him, calling the content fake. He demanded that Das remove the post and issue an unconditional apology.
The controversy then expanded when CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka also shared similar content.
Bhatia gives 24-hour deadline for apology
Following the circulation of the post, Bhatia directly confronted Das on social media and demanded its removal.
Addressing Das, Bhatia wrote: “You have 24 hours to remove this and apologize unconditionally.”
The issue took another turn when Das later said he had been informed that the graphic was AI-generated. However, rather than apologising, Das challenged BJP leaders to repeat the allegation themselves.
Das said, “I’ve been told it was created using AI. Nevertheless, I challenge any BJP leader to repeat this. What’s the problem with doing so? Ally Chirag Paswan has distanced himself from the thug and even filed an FIR. Why is no one in the BJP saying anything? Are they supporting the thugs?”
The exchange consequently moved beyond a social media argument, with Bhatia indicating that he would pursue legal remedies.
Das deletes post but apology does not follow
Das subsequently deleted the controversial post. However, according to Bhatia, no unconditional apology was issued.
Bhatia then highlighted the deletion and warned that simply removing the content would not end the matter.
He said, “It took only 83 minutes for the post to be deleted. An unconditional apology has still not been issued. If an unconditional apology is not made, an FIR could be filed tomorrow. You can’t spread propaganda and then simply delete the post and get away with it.”
The BJP leader has now followed through on the legal route by approaching the Delhi High Court and seeking ₹2 crore in damages through the defamation proceedings.
