Putin Shrugs Off Trump’s Greenland Push, Says “Not Russia’s Problem” Amid NATO Unease

Russian President Vladimir Putin has distanced Moscow from the growing controversy surrounding US President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, making it clear that Russia has no intention of weighing in on the matter despite rising tensions within NATO.

Speaking during a late-night meeting of Russia’s Security Council, Putin said the future of Greenland is an issue for the countries directly involved and does not affect Russian interests. He downplayed the geopolitical implications being debated in Western capitals, suggesting the situation would resolve itself without external intervention.

Putin also took a historical detour, noting that Greenland’s relationship with Denmark has long been complex. Without directly criticising current Danish leadership, he remarked that the island has historically been treated more like a possession than an equal partner, though he stressed that this was irrelevant to Russia’s position today.

The Russian leader appeared unimpressed by claims that Trump’s Greenland comments could destabilise the transatlantic alliance. According to Putin, disagreements of this nature are internal matters for NATO members and not something Moscow intends to exploit or interfere with.

Referencing past territorial transactions, Putin reminded audiences that the sale of land between nations is not without precedent. He pointed out that Denmark itself sold the Virgin Islands to the United States in the early 20th century, while Russia transferred Alaska to Washington in the 19th century—moves that were once controversial but later accepted as historical facts.

By invoking these examples, Putin suggested that debates over territory, however dramatic they may seem in the moment, often settle over time without triggering the global upheaval some predict.
