Mumbai: The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on the long-pending dispute over the Shiv Sena party name and its bow-and-arrow election symbol. The case will now be heard on Friday, January 23, instead of Wednesday as earlier planned.
The matter has been in court for several years and is closely linked to the political split in Shiv Sena. The judges decided to change the hearing date after being informed that the government’s top law officer was busy with another important case. After listening to both sides, the court fixed a new date and time for the hearing.
Lawyers representing the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena UBT said they were disappointed by the delay. They stated that the case has already taken a long time and that repeated postponements have added to political uncertainty in Maharashtra. According to them, the issue is not just about one party but could have a wider impact on Indian politics in the future.
The hearing on January 23 is being seen as especially important because it falls on the 100th birth anniversary of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray. Many believe the court may deliver an important decision on that day.
The dispute began in 2022 when Eknath Shinde led a rebellion against then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, resulting in the collapse of the state government. Shinde later joined hands with the BJP to form a new government in Maharashtra. His group claimed that Uddhav Thackeray had moved away from Shiv Sena’s original ideology.
In 2023, the Election Commission recognised the Shinde group as the official Shiv Sena and allowed it to use the party name and the bow-and-arrow symbol. The Uddhav Thackeray faction challenged this decision in the Supreme Court, arguing that the ruling was unfair and taken too early.
