New Delhi: With the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections fast approaching, the Congress high command is considering appointing Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to lead the party’s campaign. The move comes amid increasing frustration over internal conflicts within the state unit of the Congress party.
The proposal to entrust Priyanka Gandhi with the responsibility has been put forward by Deepa Dasmunsi, the AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala. Dasmunsi has suggested that Priyanka lead a special committee to oversee the Assembly election campaign.
At a high-level meeting in Delhi last month, senior Congress leaders from Kerala and the party’s central leadership discussed the internal issues affecting the state unit. Priyanka Gandhi played an active role in the deliberations, after which Dasmunsi held one-on-one meetings with allies of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
A major concern raised by Dasmunsi was the growing unease among UDF allies regarding the power struggle between key Kerala Congress leaders, including KPCC president K. Sudhakaran, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala.
Political observers note that factionalism has long been a problem for Congress in Kerala, whereas the ruling CPI(M) under Pinarayi Vijayan has maintained a disciplined and united front despite corruption allegations. They warn that Congress risks alienating voters if internal disputes continue.
The first test of Congress’ unity after the Delhi meeting will be the Nilambur Assembly by-election, following the resignation of Left-backed Independent MLA P.V. Anvar. Later this year, the party will face another crucial challenge in the local body elections, ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.
