Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has criticized the Maharashtra government for its “public apathy” in addressing the surge in cyber fraud cases, highlighting the alarming absence of a full-time Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Mumbai’s cyber police department for nearly 19 months.

Chaturvedi shared a personal incident involving her 77-year-old father, who recently fell prey to cyber fraudsters. “About a fortnight ago, my father was targeted in a cyber scam and was trapped for half an hour before realizing the fraud. Thankfully, no financial loss occurred, and he filed an FIR,” she revealed.

The MP expressed frustration over the lack of action and accountability, stating, “I doubt the state government, or even the central government, is serious about cracking down on these fraudsters. Despite raising concerns multiple times and writing to Hon. Ministers, I have not received any response.”

Highlighting the broader issue, Chaturvedi pointed to the cyber police department’s prolonged lack of leadership. “The report that Mumbai’s cyber department has been without a DCP for over 18 months reflects a total disregard for the safety and concerns of common citizens,” she said.

Cyber fraud cases have been on the rise across the country, with Maharashtra emerging as a hotspot. Chaturvedi’s criticism underscores the urgent need for robust measures and stronger leadership to address the growing menace.
