The U.S. President, after a meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah II, has signaled a potential breakthrough in the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict. President Biden expressed optimism about brokering a deal between the two warring factions, proposing a six-week pause in fighting to facilitate the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas.

Stressing the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where approximately 100 hostages are still in captivity following the October 7 attack, Biden emphasized the need for immediate action. He underscored the tragic loss of innocent lives in both Gaza and Israel, urging restraint and caution to prevent further escalation of violence.

Biden’s diplomatic efforts include engagements with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as leaders of Qatar and Egypt, to advance the proposed deal. While acknowledging the complexity of the situation, the President affirmed the United States’ commitment to achieving a temporary ceasefire, delivering humanitarian aid, and securing the release of hostages.

This shift in approach reflects a departure from previous U.S. policy, which had focused on preventing Hamas from retaining control over Gaza. The proposed deal aims to provide a respite from the ongoing conflict and pave the way for discussions on the region’s future political and military control.

The meeting between President Biden and King Abdullah II underscores ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the Gaza war and plan for the post-conflict scenario. With key elements of the deal on the table, hopes are high for a breakthrough that could bring much-needed relief to the people of Gaza and Israel alike.
