New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the nationwide celebration marking 150 years of India’s revered national song, “Vande Mataram.” The grand event, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, also witnessed the release of a special commemorative stamp and coin dedicated to the timeless composition that has inspired generations of Indians.

The celebration officially commences on November 7, 2025, and will continue until November 7, 2026, honoring the enduring legacy of Vande Mataram — a song that stirred the nation’s conscience during the freedom struggle and continues to symbolize patriotism and unity.

In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi said, “We celebrate 150 glorious years of Vande Mataram, a stirring call that has inspired generations and ignited an undying spirit of patriotism across our nation.”

As part of the commemoration, the government has planned a nationwide Mass Singing of the full version of “Vande Mataram” at 9:50 AM in public spaces across India. Citizens from all walks of life — students, officials, artists, and community groups — are expected to participate simultaneously in this historic musical tribute.

Originally composed by Bankimchandra Chatterji on Akshaya Navami, November 7, 1875, the song was first published in “Bangadarshan”, a literary journal, as part of Chatterji’s iconic novel “Anandamath.” The verses evoke the motherland as a divine embodiment of strength, prosperity, and grace — encapsulating the spirit of India’s awakening.

Over time, Vande Mataram became the emotional anthem of India’s freedom movement, uniting millions under a single call for independence. The year-long celebration will feature cultural events, exhibitions, musical performances, and educational programs across the country, reaffirming the song’s timeless relevance.

A government statement described Vande Mataram as “an enduring symbol of devotion to the motherland and a poetic reflection of India’s collective pride.”
