Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited debate with his latest remarks linking his trade policies to global peacekeeping efforts. Addressing reporters at the White House on Thursday (November 6), Trump asserted that his decision to impose trade tariffs played a key role in defusing tensions between India and Pakistan during a period of heightened military escalation.
“Of the eight wars I ended, five or six were because of tariffs,” Trump said, claiming his economic measures prevented a major conflict between the two nuclear powers. “If you look at India and Pakistan, they were about to fight – two nuclear nations. Eight planes were shot down. And I said, ‘If you guys are going to fight, I am going to put tariffs on you.’ They were not happy, and within 24 hours, I settled the war. The former president was referring to the sharp border tensions that followed India’s precision airstrikes under ‘Operation Sindoor’, conducted in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives earlier this year.
During the same briefing — originally focused on a new initiative to bring down the prices of weight-loss drugs — Trump took a moment to praise Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him “a great man” and “a friend.”
“He largely stopped buying from Russia. He is a friend of mine, and we speak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a great man. He wants me to go there, and I will. We’ll figure that out,” Trump stated, hinting that a visit to India might be on the cards next year. When asked about his travel plans, he added briefly, “It could be.”
Adding to the discussion, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the administration’s intent to deepen bilateral ties. “The President is positive and feels very strongly about the India-US relationship. A few weeks ago, he spoke to Prime Minister Modi directly while celebrating Diwali in the Oval Office with senior Indian-American officials,” Leavitt said.
