Port Louis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his visit to Mauritius, was conferred with the country’s highest civilian honour, The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, marking a historic moment in India-Mauritius relations. He is the first Indian to receive this prestigious award.
PM Modi extended his heartfelt wishes to the people of Mauritius on their National Day, stating that he looked forward to participating in the celebrations. Sharing highlights of his visit, he described Mauritius as a “close maritime neighbour” and “important partner” in the Indian Ocean region.
Strengthening India-Mauritius Partnership
On Tuesday, PM Modi met his Mauritius counterpart, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, where both leaders reviewed bilateral ties and discussed ways to deepen cooperation. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment as a “valued and trusted development partner” of Mauritius and emphasized joint efforts to advance the interests of the Global South.
During a banquet hosted in his honour, PM Modi expressed India’s unwavering support for Mauritius, highlighting the strong historical and cultural ties between the two nations. He also recalled his previous visit, during which he proposed the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, reinforcing India’s strategic commitment to the Indian Ocean region.
Meeting with Mauritius President & Special Gesture
PM Modi also met Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool at the State House, where he handed over OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) cards to the President and First Lady Brinda Gokhool in a symbolic gesture of deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
