New Delhi: A fresh political spat has erupted between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit dismissed any possibility of an alliance between the two parties in the upcoming Gujarat and Goa elections. His statement came as a sharp response to AAP leader Atishi’s announcement that her party would contest the 2027 elections in these states independently.
Dikshit, speaking to IANS, questioned AAP’s stance and took a swipe at its relevance in the alliance debate. “What’s new in this? Who is actually forming an alliance with them? They are just flattering themselves. If they want an alliance, they can tie up with parties like the Trinamool Congress or the Samajwadi Party, whose main agenda is to cut Congress votes. The Congress is not forming any alliance with them,” he remarked.
Atishi, in her statement, pointed out that AAP had contested separately in the Delhi Assembly elections, and the lack of a coalition with Congress cost her party over a dozen seats. She implied that had the two parties joined forces, the election results might have been different. However, Congress has made it clear that such a partnership is not on the table.
The tensions between Congress and AAP have been mounting over the past few years, with both parties competing for a similar voter base in several states. While AAP has positioned itself as an alternative to the BJP and Congress, its electoral performance in national and state elections has been inconsistent outside its strongholds of Delhi and Punjab.
In a separate controversy, Sandeep Dikshit also weighed in on recent remarks by Uttar Pradesh Minister Raghuraj Singh, who suggested that Muslim men wear burqas to avoid Holi colours. Condemning the comment, Dikshit called it “inappropriate and insensitive” and criticized the increasing communal rhetoric in politics.
