New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday strongly condemned the attempted attack on Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai in the Supreme Court, calling it a “reprehensible act” that has angered every citizen of the nation. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister also lauded Gavai for his composed response during the incident.

“Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable,” PM Modi tweeted. He added, “I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice Gavai in the face of such a situation,” highlighting the CJI’s “commitment to values of justice and strengthening the spirit of our Constitution.”

The incident occurred when 71-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishore attempted to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai inside the courtroom. Despite the attack, Gavai remained unfazed and instructed security personnel and officials present to ignore the disruption. “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me,” the CJI reportedly said during the proceedings.

Kishore, a resident of Mayur Vihar, Delhi, was apprehended by the police and questioned for three hours. Authorities later recovered a note from him stating: “India will not tolerate insults to Sanatan Dharma.” He was reportedly carrying cards of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Shahdara Bar Association.
