Opposition to reimposition of lockdown not without reason, Maharashtra falls behind in GST revenues

@prashanthamine

Mumbai: Strong opposition from Congress, the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partner to its Maharashtra government toying with the idea of reimposition of stringent lockdown measures to halt the spread of Coronavirus in the state is not without any reason. If in September 2020, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenues showed Zero percent growth rate during the lockdown period, post-lockdown, Maharashtra has registered just 17 percent growth in GST revenues for March 2021 compared to six other state’s in the country.

Maharashtra ranks seventh, way below states like West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Maharashtra ranks even below state’s like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura and union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The GST revenue collection in Maharashtra which was Rs. 15,002.11 crore in March 2020 rose marginally to Rs. 17,038.49 crore in March 2021 which comes to 17 percent, as per the state wise GST data released by Union Government on Thursday.

The comparative data for the six other states in percentage terms (March 2020 to March 2021) is as follows: West Bengal 22 percent, Odisha 25 percent, Chhattisgarh 22 percent, Gujarat 20 percent, Kerala 24 percent and Tamil Nadu 23 percent.

The data for three state’s and union territory of Jammu and Kashmir is much better, which is as follows: union territory of Jammu & Kashmir 27 percent, Arunachal Pradesh 38 percent, Manipur 40 percent and Tripura 31 percent.

Former Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam and his supporters today protested against any moves by the government to reimpose lockdown measures. While former Congress chief minister Prithviraj Chavan while opposing the move had demanded that the government make allocations for lost wages of daily wage workers by making direct money transfers to their accounts.

As per the press release issued by Union Government today the gross GST revenue collected in the month of March 2021 is at a record of Rs 1,23,902 crore of which CGST is Rs 22,973 crore, SGST is Rs 29,329 crore, IGST is Rs 62,842 crore (including Rs 31,097 crore collected on import of goods) and Cess is Rs 8,757 crore (including Rs 935 crore collected on import of goods).

GST revenues crossed above Rs 1 lakh crore mark at a stretch for the last six months and a steep increasing trend over this period are clear indicators of rapid economic recovery post pandemic, claims the Union Government in its press release issued here on Thursday.
