New Delhi: The inaugural meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) bills sparked a lively debate as opposition and BJP MPs exchanged views on the contentious legislation. The session followed a detailed presentation by the Ministry of Law and Justice, outlining the provisions and objectives of the bills.

The bills in question, the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, were introduced in the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session on December 18, 2024. Following their introduction, they were referred to the JPC for further examination. The panel comprises 39 members, including 27 from the Lok Sabha and 12 from the Rajya Sabha.

During the meeting, opposition leaders raised concerns about the feasibility and impact of conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned the claim that such a move would significantly reduce election-related expenditure. She argued that logistical challenges, potential risks to federalism, and the practicality of synchronizing elections across diverse states required deeper analysis.

BJP members, however, defended the proposal, emphasizing the efficiency and cost-saving benefits it could bring. They argued that simultaneous polls would minimize the disruption caused by frequent elections and enable governments to focus more on governance rather than perpetual campaigning.
