In a striking turn of events, boxer Vijender Singh’s decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stirred up controversy, dealing another blow to the Congress just weeks before the Lok Sabha elections.

Having previously aligned himself with the Congress in 2019, Singh’s unsuccessful electoral bid in the South Delhi constituency against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri is now overshadowed by his defection to the rival party.

Recent reports indicate that the Congress had planned to field the 38-year-old pugilist against BJP MP Hema Malini, seeking to bolster their support among the Jat community in Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh. Singh’s anticipated involvement in BJP’s election campaign in these regions has raised eyebrows across the political spectrum.

However, this move has not gone unnoticed by the opposition. Clyde Crasto, spokesperson of Sharad Pawar’s party, has condemned Singh’s political transition. In a scathing tweet, Crasto questioned Singh’s commitment to justice, particularly in light of the ongoing protests by women wrestlers against BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

“Hey @boxervijender, now that you have joined @BJP4India, will you bring justice to our women #wrestlers who are fighting against #BrijBhushanSharanSingh or has #BJP declared you a ‘Technical Knockout’ loser? Your silence from here on will only be shameful,” Crasto’s tweet read.

Singh’s alignment with the BJP has not only caused ripples within the political arena but has also sparked a broader conversation about athletes’ involvement in politics and their responsibility towards social issues.
