The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has made a significant announcement regarding its candidate for the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency in the upcoming general elections. Sunetra Mahajan, the wife of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, has been selected as the NCP’s candidate for the prestigious seat. The announcement was made by NCP’s state unit chief, Sunil Tatkare, on Tuesday, signaling the party’s commitment to contesting in Baramati from within the ruling coalition.
According to reports, Tatkare emphasized the importance of fielding candidates in constituencies where the party has a strong foundation. With the seat-sharing deal within the ruling coalition yet to be finalized, Sunetra Pawar’s candidacy for Baramati is a strategic move by the NCP to assert its presence in the region.
The NCP’s decision sets the stage for an intriguing electoral battle, as Sunetra Pawar will be contesting against her sister-in-law, Supriya Sule, who is the incumbent MP from the opposition NCP (SP). This marks the first time that two members of the Pawar family will be competing against each other in an electoral contest.
But who is Sunetra Pawar? Known for her contributions in various fields, Sunetra is the founder of the Environmental Forum of India, established in 2010. She also holds the position of trustee at Vidya Prathishthan, a renowned educational institution. Additionally, Sunetra has been a member of the World Entrepreneurship Forum’s Think Tank since 2011, showcasing her dedication to global entrepreneurship initiatives. Her political lineage includes being the sister of Padamsinh Patil, a senior politician and former minister.
In response to rumors surrounding Sunetra’s candidacy, Supriya Sule affirmed her democratic right to contest while emphasizing the democratic process. Similarly, Sharad Pawar echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of democratic elections and competition.
Ajit Pawar, in an emotional appeal to constituents, emphasized the need for proactive constituency work and better development in Baramati. He underscored the accomplishments of Supriya Sule while expressing his intention to field a candidate for the constituency.
As the electoral battle for Baramati intensifies with family members pitted against each other, all eyes will be on Sunetra Mahajan and Supriya Sule as they vie for the coveted Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming elections.
