Mumbai: Mumbai is finally set to get its long-awaited Water Metro, and if all approvals move on schedule, the first phase could begin operations from December this year. Maharashtra Ports Minister Nitesh Rane confirmed that the ambitious coastal transport project will roll out in phases, starting with key city routes before expanding across the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The government plans to introduce battery-powered ferries along Mumbai’s coastline to reduce road congestion and offer an eco-friendly commuting option. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected to be submitted by the end of February. After that, final administrative and financial approvals will be secured.

Key Routes Identified Across Mumbai & MMR

Officials have identified six to eight major water routes across MMR. However, two routes are likely to be launched in the first phase. Inside Mumbai city, high-traffic coastal stretches will be prioritized, including:

  • Nariman Point
  • Worli
  • Bandra
  • Juhu
  • Versova

One of the biggest highlights of the project is the proposed water link from the Radio Club Jetty near the Gateway of India to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. Once operational, this route is expected to cut travel time to around 40 minutes — a significant improvement over road travel during peak hours.

Travel Time, Capacity & Service Plan

The Water Metro will operate modern electric ferries designed specifically for daily urban commuting. Each ferry is expected to carry between 50 and 100 passengers per trip.

Officials believe this new transport system will:

  • Reduce pressure on Mumbai’s overloaded roads
  • Ease congestion on suburban trains
  • Offer a cleaner, fuel-efficient alternative
  • Cut down carbon emissions

The project is also expected to improve last-mile connectivity across coastal areas.

Ticket Price & Travel Rules

While official ticket prices have not yet been announced, authorities have indicated that fares will remain affordable and comparable to AC local train or metro ticket prices.

Basic travel guidelines are expected to include:

  • Mandatory valid ticket or digital pass before boarding
  • Entry only through designated jetties
  • Strict on-board safety compliance
  • Limited luggage allowance

Full fare details and booking procedures will be announced closer to the launch date.

Inspired by Kochi’s Model

Mumbai’s Water Metro is being modeled on the successful system operated by Kochi Metro Rail Limited in Kochi. The Kochi Water Metro uses battery-powered ferries to efficiently connect islands and mainland areas, promoting sustainable urban mobility.

By adopting a similar approach, Mumbai aims to build a modern, green, and time-saving water transport network. The total estimated cost of the project is around ₹1,200 crore.
