Mumbai: Several neighbourhoods in Mumbai are grappling with water shortages on Tuesday as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertakes crucial diversion work on a major water pipeline linked to the Mumbai Metro Line 7A project. Civic officials confirmed that water supply in parts of E Ward will remain disrupted until 4:00 PM today, impacting thousands of households.
The interruption is due to construction work on a 2,400-mm overhead water pipeline passing through the Bamnwada and Vile Parle East stretch. While the shutdown was initially planned for a shorter duration, technical complications forced engineers to extend the work schedule. As a result, water supply from Powai High Level Reservoir-1 has also been temporarily halted.
According to the BMC, the impact is being felt in different phases, depending on each area’s regular water supply timing. Early-morning supply zones such as Om Nagar, Kanti Nagar, Sahar Gaon and Rajasthan Society have already experienced cuts. Areas that usually receive water later in the day—including MIDC zones, Kondivita, Maheshwari Nagar, Durga Pada and Bhavani Nagar—are also facing delays or reduced flow.
Localities that depend on afternoon water supply, such as Bamnwada, Airport Colony, Chakala, Marol Industrial Area, JB Nagar and surrounding areas, are expected to see significant disruption until restoration work is completed.
The civic body has advised residents to rely on stored water and exercise restraint until normal supply resumes. Officials stressed that the work is essential to support long-term infrastructure upgrades connected to Metro Line 7A.
Meanwhile, the BMC has also announced a major 99-hour water supply cut beginning Monday, December 22 (10:00 AM) and lasting till Friday, December 26 (1:00 PM) in parts of G North, K East and H East wards. During this period, areas in Dharavi, Andheri and Bandra may experience low pressure and altered supply timings, further adding to residents’ concerns.
