Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has publicly commended the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for its role in restoring Nalanda University, describing the revival of the ancient seat of learning as one of the government’s most understated yet meaningful achievements. His remarks came after his visit to the Nalanda Literature Festival 2025 held at Rajgir in Bihar.
Sharing his views on social media platform X, Tharoor said he was struck by the scale, vision and academic promise of the newly developed Nalanda University campus. He credited External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and India’s diplomatic machinery for successfully bringing back an institution that once symbolised global knowledge exchange. Referring to the project as a “remarkable achievement,” Tharoor noted that such efforts by the MEA often go unnoticed despite their long-term cultural and intellectual impact.
Tharoor inaugurated the Nalanda Literature Festival 2025 alongside Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and participated in multiple panel discussions with scholars, writers and students. During these interactions, he highlighted Nalanda’s historic importance as a global learning hub that once attracted students from across Asia, including regions such as China, Japan, Thailand and West Asia.
At the same time, Tharoor offered a candid assessment of India’s current standing in global higher education. He pointed out that despite progress, Indian universities are yet to secure positions among the world’s top 50 institutions. While a few have entered the top 200 rankings, he said the country still has a long way to go in reclaiming its historical leadership in knowledge and research.
