Mumbai: Maharashtra politics is on the brink of a major shake-up as Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray are expected to formally unveil their long-anticipated political partnership today, December 24. The development has sent ripples across political circles, especially with crucial municipal corporation elections just weeks away.
Speculation around the alliance intensified after Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut shared a cryptic social media post late Monday night. The post featured a rare photograph of the Thackeray cousins together, accompanied only by a brief Marathi line hinting at a noon announcement. Within minutes, the post triggered widespread buzz among party workers, supporters and political observers.
The timing of the move is significant. Elections to 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, including power centres like Mumbai and Pune, are scheduled for January 15, with vote counting on January 16. A united front by the Thackeray brothers is expected to dramatically alter electoral equations, particularly in urban Maharashtra.
According to leaders familiar with the discussions, the alliance will not be restricted to Mumbai alone. The two parties are likely to contest together in at least five key civic bodies — Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayandar, Kalyan-Dombivli and Nashik — signalling a broader strategy aimed at consolidating the Marathi vote and countering rival alliances.
Sanjay Raut has earlier indicated that the announcement would be made jointly and with a strong political message. He has also suggested that joint rallies featuring Uddhav and Raj Thackeray will be held not only in Mumbai but across major cities such as Pune, Nashik and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in the run-up to the polls.
If confirmed, this will mark the first formal political coming together of the Thackeray cousins in nearly two decades. Their last major public appearance together was in July 2025 at a rally opposing what they termed the “imposition of Hindi,” a moment that reignited speculation about reconciliation.
