Mumbai: The Maharashtra government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been alerted to the discovery of Omicron, a new variant of the Coronavirus in South Africa. As a precautionary step, a new jumbo oxygen plant will be commissioned soon in Mumbai to prevent possible shortage of oxygen to prevent the spread of the virus.
Shiv Sena MP, Rahul Shewale visited the oxygen plant in Mahul area in the eastern suburbs and reviewed the work here. During this inspection officials from Bharat Petroleum and officials from BMC were also present at the site. CGM N Chandrasekhar, DGM Panchal, CM Uday Kaikani, Corporator Shrikant Shetty, BMC officials and other office bearers were present on the occasion.
As per information given by Shewale, Bharat Petroleum and BMC will soon supply about one and a half thousand oxygen cylinders in a day from this plant.
The state government had announced ‘Mission Oxygen’ to reduce the risk of a third wave of corona, which is expected to arrive by December. As a precautionary measure MP Shewale had appealed to big companies in his Lok Sabha constituency to set up oxygen plants, responding to this, Bharat Petroleum with the help of BMC started the work to set up of this jumbo oxygen plant three months ago and this plant will be commissioned soon.

Also, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd. (RCF) has started an oxygen plant at Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi. As per BMC’s order, Oxygen will be supplied to hospitals in Mumbai from this plant.
“Although no case of the new virus has been found in the country yet, as per the orders of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, the Covid Task Force has alerted the concerned agencies and ordered them to be on high alert. Against this backdrop, I am confident that this jumbo oxygen plant will not allow a shortage of medical oxygen in Mumbai in the future”, said Rahul Shewale.
Features of Jumbo Oxygen Plant are as follows:
An Oxygen plant has been set up at Mahul, Chembur on the municipal corporation’s land.
Oxygen production by VPSA technology – One Oxygen Compressor System has been installed by Bharat Petroleum and two by the Corporation.
The project’s approximate cost is ₹ 15 crores.
50 cylinders per hour will be produced and each cylinder will contain 14 litres, and about 1500 cylinders will be supplied daily.
Supply of oxygen cylinders to Lokmanya Tilak Hospital and other major hospitals.
