Former Vice President Mike Pence made waves on Friday as he announced that he would not be endorsing his former boss, Donald Trump, for the 2024 general elections. Speaking to Fox News, Pence cited concerns about Trump’s stance on certain issues, particularly regarding the sanctity of human life.
“I’ve seen him starting to shy away from a commitment to the sanctity of human life,” Pence stated, underlining his reasons for withholding his endorsement. Despite this decision, Pence expressed pride in the Trump-Pence administration’s accomplishments during their tenure.
However, Pence clarified that he would not be throwing his support behind US President Joe Biden either, emphasizing that he remains firmly aligned with conservative principles.
Pence’s announcement came on the heels of Trump securing enough Republican delegates to clinch the party’s nomination for the upcoming elections. Pence remarked that Trump’s agenda seemed to diverge from the conservative platform they had governed on during their time in office.
Acknowledging his differences with Trump, Pence stated, “That’s why I cannot in good conscience endorse Donald Trump in this campaign.” He also affirmed that he would not be casting his vote for Biden, keeping his decision private.
Instead, Pence outlined his focus for the year ahead, aiming to promote the mainstream conservative agenda that has traditionally defined the Republican Party.
During his interview on The Story with Martha MacCallum, Pence highlighted his concerns about Trump’s recent policy shifts, including reversals on issues like confronting the national debt and taking a tougher stance on China, specifically regarding the TikTok controversy.
Pence’s decision not to endorse Trump underscores the internal divisions within the Republican Party as it navigates its path forward in the post-Trump era.
