The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Rajeev Kumar, made a resolute defense of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) while announcing the dates for the Lok Sabha elections on Saturday. In a poetic gesture, Kumar invoked the concept of loyalty (‘wafa’) to emphasize the integrity of the EVMs, dismissing allegations of hacking.

Quoting poetry, Kumar asserted, “Adhuri hasraton ka ilzaam har baar lagana hum par theek nahi, wafa khud se nahi hoti khata EVM ki kehte ho” (Blaming us for unfulfilled desires is not right; accusing the EVM of disloyalty is incorrect).

He emphasized that the EVMs undergo rigorous testing, including mock polls conducted thrice before deployment on polling day, all under the scrutiny of candidates. Kumar challenged the credibility of those who allege EVM tampering despite favorable election outcomes.

“All parties know in their hearts EVMs made the poll process fairer and better; the same EVMs have seen ruling parties lose… Courts looked into various complaints against EVMs 40 times and rejected all charges every time,” Kumar emphasized.

Critiquing those who propagate false accusations on social media, Kumar highlighted that courts have begun imposing penalties on individuals maliciously alleging EVM tampering.

He underscored the role of EVM integrity in fostering the emergence of numerous political parties, including smaller ones, as a testament to the fairness of the electoral process.

Last year, in September, the Election Commission of India (EC) assured the Supreme Court that EVMs are immune to hacking or tampering. In a comprehensive affidavit spanning 450 pages, the EC affirmed that EVMs are “totally stand-alone machines having one-time programmable chips”.

The affidavit detailed stringent technical and administrative safeguards implemented by the Election Commission to prevent any tampering or manipulation of the machines, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
