A devastating earthquake of 7.7 magnitude struck central Myanmar on Friday, causing major disruptions and triggering widespread tremors across India, China, and Thailand. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 kilometers, with the quake occurring around 12:50 PM local time (0620 GMT).

The earthquake led to cracked roads and structural damage in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw and was powerful enough to shake northern Thailand, Bangkok, and parts of Vietnam. Shocking visuals on social media showed a building collapse in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, while authorities in Thailand suspended metro and light rail services due to safety concerns.

In China’s Yunnan province, the tremors were severe, with Beijing’s quake agency reporting the magnitude as 7.9. The impact of the earthquake was also felt in India, particularly in West Bengal’s Kolkata and Manipur’s Imphal, though no significant damage has been reported so far.

Myanmar is no stranger to seismic activity, as the country sits along the Sagaing Fault, a tectonic region prone to earthquakes. Historically, between 1930 and 1956, six earthquakes with magnitudes above 7.0 have struck near this fault line.
