The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after she reportedly objected to a forecast predicting India’s rise as the world’s largest economy by 2060.
During an event at the University of Oxford’s Kellogg College in the United Kingdom, Banerjee was seen in a video clip disagreeing with the projection that India would become the number one economy. The remarks have triggered backlash from the BJP, with party leaders accusing her of undermining India’s progress.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared a video from the discussion on “Social Development – Girl, Child and Women Empowerment in West Bengal,” where a moderator stated, “India has already overtaken the UK, and soon it will be the third largest economy. By 2060, it is predicted to be the first economy in the world.” Responding to this, Mamata Banerjee said, “I will differ that.”
She further elaborated, saying, “There are so many things about which I should not speak here—internal and external affairs, I cannot disclose. I have a different opinion. Every country is facing challenges post-COVID and with the ongoing global turmoil. If an economic war-like situation persists, how can we expect growth? We can only hope. It is our dream that our country does well, but it depends.”
