Mahayuti Leaders Celebrate Global Honour as 12 Forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Enter UNESCO World Heritage List

Mumbai: In a proud moment for Maharashtra and the country, 12 iconic forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj have been officially included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, sparking celebrations across the state.

Leaders of the Mahayuti alliance, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, hailed the global recognition as a tribute to the legacy of the Maratha warrior king and a moment of historic significance for Indian heritage.

The 12 forts that now enjoy UNESCO status include:
Raigad, Pratapgad, Panhala, Shivneri, Lohgad, Salher, Sindhudurg, Suvarnadurg, Vijaydurg, and Khanderi, all of which played critical roles in Shivaji Maharaj’s military campaigns and administration.

The state government had been pushing the proposal for several years, and this recognition is seen as a diplomatic and cultural victory. The UNESCO tag is expected to boost global tourism, strengthen heritage conservation, and deepen international awareness about Maharashtra’s rich Maratha history.
