Food safety regulator FSSAI has taken action against several food companies over claims made in advertisements, product packaging and promotional material. Following the action, Mondelez India, the maker of Bournvita, and Amway India have withdrawn or changed some of their product claims.
The regulator has been reviewing health and nutrition-related statements used by food businesses to ensure that consumers are not given misleading information about products.
Bournvita maker removes nutritional claim
Mondelez India, which manufactures Bournvita, was asked to address claims related to the nutritional value of its beverage product.
Following FSSAI’s intervention, the company withdrew the disputed claims and the related advertisement.
The action comes as the food regulator continues to examine promotional statements that may give consumers an incorrect impression about the nutritional benefits of food and beverage products.
Amway removes ‘100% Pure’ claim
FSSAI also raised objections to Amway India’s use of the phrase “100% Pure Coconut Oil” on one of its products.
The regulator said the claim did not comply with food safety and advertising rules and referred to its advisory concerning the use of the term “100” in food labels and promotional material.
Amway subsequently removed “100%” from its product packaging and promotional content. The company also stopped selling the older packaging through its sales channels.
The company has finalised revised packaging, which is now being produced. The updated packs are expected to enter the market gradually between September and October 2026. Amway is also set to make corresponding changes to its website.
The latest actions highlight FSSAI’s continued scrutiny of food labels and advertisements, particularly claims relating to nutrition, purity and health benefits.
