EAM Jaishankar’s Visit to Beijing Marks Diplomatic Reset, Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Resumes After Four-Year Gap

Beijing: In a significant development in India-China relations, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing on Monday, marking his first official visit to China in five years. The meeting is seen as a part of efforts to stabilize and gradually rebuild diplomatic engagement following years of tension post the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

During the discussions, India extended support to China’s presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), while also raising bilateral concerns and regional issues. The two sides acknowledged the importance of maintaining open communication, especially given the current complex global environment.

A major highlight of the visit was the official resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a revered pilgrimage for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. The Yatra had been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and unresolved logistical and diplomatic issues with China. With its return, thousands of Indian devotees are expected to undertake the journey this year via the traditional Lipulekh and Nathu La routes.

India and China are also commemorating 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, and officials see Jaishankar’s visit as part of a series of confidence-building measures aimed at mending fractured ties.

The bilateral talks come ahead of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled in Tianjin on July 15, where Jaishankar is expected to represent India. He is also likely to meet his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during the visit to discuss the roadmap for future engagements, including dialogue on the longstanding border issues under the Special Representatives (SR) mechanism.

With key back-to-back visits by Indian leaders — including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and NSA Ajit Doval earlier this year — the Indian side appears keen on reviving communication channels that have remained largely dormant since 2020. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi is also expected to visit India next month for further discussions.
