Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Thursday announced a tie-up with Google India to use the Google platform to provide digital education in the state and to train its teachers for the same.

Maharashtra is the first state to adopt Google platform in over 1 lakh schools across the state. Over 1.34 lakh teachers have volunteered to be trained for digital education on various online resources available to make education more interactive and interesting for students.

Education minister Varsha Gaikwad admitted to the problem of inequitable digital access for online education especially among rural students but said that the state was working on it. Gaikwad said that the state government was working with communities, NGO’s and schools to resolve the issue of lack of digital access among students.

According to the state’s own survey, only 60% of the state’s students had access to digital devices along with internet needed for online education. The state says it runs educational classes on 12 channels of Jio TV and on Sahyadri TV and has Diksha App for students from Class III – XII for those without digital access, though officials say such educational modes lack interface.

Director  of the Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training (MSCERT) Dinkar Patil told thenews21, “In the first phase, teachers from government schools would be trained by Google on how to use the Google platform, their resources, share videos, give instructions to students, and make PPT etc. About 40,000 teachers would be trained as master trainers in the first phase, who in turn will train others.“

He further said, ”Later, teachers of aided and even non-aided private schools would be trained as part of this exercise. The entire program will be done virtually and will also benefit the 2.3 crores student community in Maharashtra. Students will also learn how to save teaching videos for further offline watching. The Google classroom has many more interactive options than Zoom.”

Google India plans to train over a million teachers in a year and plans to transform private and government education by making education accessible for all. Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said that his government emphasised on restarting education over restarting schools. Thackeray said that the global pandemic had pushed us into the future and urged Google to ease technology for those who Work from Home (WFH).
