In a significant move that is expected to escalate tensions within Maharashtra’s ruling Mahayuti alliance, the Home Department, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has withdrawn the Y-security cover for 20 MLAs from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The decision, aimed at curbing the misuse of state resources, also saw reductions in the security cover for some MLAs from the BJP and Ajit Pawar-led NCP, though the changes were fewer compared to those from Shinde’s camp.
The Y-security cover was initially granted to these MLAs following their defection from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena in 2022, a move that ultimately led to the downfall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. Despite not holding ministerial positions, the security was provided as an additional perk at the time.
