Mumbai: In a landmark move, the Maharashtra government has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Elon Musk’s Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt Ltd, marking India’s first-ever state-level partnership with the global satellite internet giant. The collaboration aims to bring high-speed satellite-based internet connectivity to remote, rural, and underserved regions of the state.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the partnership on Wednesday, highlighting that districts such as Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim, and Dharashiv will be the first to benefit from this initiative. “It is a proud moment that Starlink has chosen Maharashtra as its first partner in India. This collaboration will strengthen our Digital Maharashtra mission and connect our remotest communities to the global network,” Fadnavis said in a post on X.
Under this partnership, satellite internet services will be rolled out across government institutions, schools, healthcare centers, and disaster management units, ensuring that even the state’s most isolated regions receive reliable digital access.
Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, operates the world’s largest network of communication satellites and is a major player in the global ICT sector. The Maharashtra government said the collaboration also aligns with its broader goals of advancing electric vehicle adoption, coastal infrastructure development, and disaster resilience under its flagship Digital Maharashtra programme.
