Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday defended his government’s handling of the January 29 Maha Kumbh stampede in Prayagraj, stating that swift action prevented widespread chaos among the eight crore devotees present at the holy event.

Addressing officials from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and Indian Postal Service in Lucknow, Adityanath said, “We did not allow the incident to be excessively highlighted, as panic could have worsened the situation. Our priority was to provide immediate medical aid and maintain order.”

The tragedy at Sangam Ghat on Mauni Amavasya, a key bathing day of the Maha Kumbh, claimed at least 30 lives and left 60 others injured. With thousands of sadhus and 13 Akhadas scheduled for the ritualistic Amrit Snan, the administration faced the daunting task of managing religious sentiments while ensuring safety.

Adityanath admitted that disputes over bathing order among Akharas have historically caused tensions, making crowd control even more critical. He personally intervened, requesting seers to delay the snan to allow the administration to restore order.

“By noon, the Sangam area was cleared, and the ritual resumed smoothly by 2:30 PM,” he stated, highlighting the government’s crisis management. He emphasized the importance of making calm, firm decisions in emergencies, saying, “In difficult situations, many panic and give up, but true leadership demands patience and control.”
