Actress Lara Dutta has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent speech at an election rally in Rajasthan, where he accused the Congress party of pledging to allocate the nation’s wealth to the Muslim community. While PM Modi’s remarks drew flak from many quarters for being “communal,” Lara has commended him for standing firm on his beliefs.

During a conversation with Zoom TV while promoting her upcoming show ‘Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond’ alongside Jimmy Shergill, Lara reacted to the PM’s controversial statement. She said, “Ultimately, we’re all human beings. It’s incredibly challenging to appease everyone all the time. Just as actors aren’t immune to online criticism, neither is the Prime Minister of our country. We all take it in our stride.”

Defending PM Modi’s right to voice his convictions, the actress added, “You can’t constantly tiptoe around issues just to avoid upsetting one side or the other. Ultimately, you have to stay true to your beliefs and convictions. If he has the courage to do so, then kudos. Ultimately, you have to stand by what you believe in.”

During the Rajasthan rally, PM Modi had stated, “Earlier, when they (the Congress) were in power, they had said Muslims have the first right to the wealth of the nation. This means they will distribute this wealth to those who have more children, to infiltrators. Should your hard-earned money be given to infiltrators? Do you agree to this?”

PM Modi’s remarks were a reference to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s 2006 statement about the need for innovative plans to ensure equitable development, particularly for minorities.

Lara Dutta’s support for the Prime Minister’s stance has stirred a fresh debate, with many criticizing her for endorsing what they perceive as a divisive and communal narrative. However, others have lauded her for upholding the principles of free speech and the right to express one’s beliefs without fear or favor.

The controversy comes as Lara and her co-star Jimmy Shergill gear up for the release of their show ‘Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond’ on JioCinema on April 25th. The Prime Minister’s remarks and Lara’s subsequent backing have added an unexpected layer of political discourse to the promotional activities for the show.
