Bengaluru: Pro-Kannada organisation Kannada Okkuta has announced a statewide bandh on March 22, protesting against the alleged assault on a state-run bus conductor in Belagavi for not speaking Marathi. The incident has reignited tensions over linguistic identity in the border region, prompting Kannada activists to demand stronger measures to protect Kannada speakers.

Leading the agitation, Kannada activist and Kannada Okkuta leader Vatal Nagaraj has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other pro-Kannada organisations to support the bandh. Addressing the media, Nagaraj said, “This bandh is for Kannada, Kannadigas, and Karnataka. We will not tolerate any attack on our language and identity.”

The bandh will take place from 6 AM to 6 PM across Karnataka, with Kannada Okkuta calling for state-run buses to be suspended and urging hotels, malls, transport unions, and the film industry to participate. Several trade and farmers’ associations are expected to join the protest.

Series of Protests Planned
Ahead of the bandh, Kannada Okkuta has announced a series of protests:

March 3: Protest at Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru, demanding action to “Save Belagavi.”
March 7: “Belagavi Chalo” rally in Belagavi.
March 11: Bandh in Attibele, bordering Tamil Nadu, to demand implementation of the Mekedatu project.
March 14: Demonstrations at Deputy Commissioners’ offices in Mandya, Mysuru, and Ramanagara.
March 16: Road blockade on Old Madras Road near Hoskote.
March 18: Meeting of pro-Kannada organisations in Bengaluru.
