Chamoli: A devastating avalanche struck the high-altitude village of Mana in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district early Friday morning, trapping 55 workers of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). While 50 workers have been rescued, at least four have died, and search operations are underway for the remaining five still buried under the snow.

According to officials, the avalanche hit the BRO camp between 5:30 am and 6 am, burying workers inside eight containers and a shed. Rescue teams, including personnel from the Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), have been battling freezing temperatures, blinding snowfall, and treacherous terrain to locate the missing workers.

Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari confirmed the incident, stating, “A massive avalanche hit the camp, trapping 55 workers. Two workers were on leave. Rescue operations were launched immediately despite harsh weather conditions.”

The ongoing rescue efforts have been intensified with the use of specialized avalanche rescue teams, thermal imaging drones, and sniffer dogs to detect any signs of life under the thick snow.
