January 2025 has been recorded as the warmest first month for the National Capital since 2019, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The city experienced higher-than-usual nighttime temperatures, with the average maximum temperature reaching 21.1°C, a notch above the long-period average (LPA) of 20.1°C. On January 31, Delhi saw the temperature peak at 27°C.

The average minimum temperature for the month settled at 8.5°C, also above the LPA of 7.5°C, marking the highest since 2017, when it was 8.7°C. Experts attributed the warm conditions to the absence of strong western disturbances, which are typically responsible for colder weather in the region.

Mahesh Palawat, a weather expert, explained, “While western disturbances passed through north India, most were weak and didn’t bring substantial snowfall or rainfall.” He added that the lack of strong systems allowed temperatures to rise quickly. Additionally, the 81% shortfall in rainfall across northwest India further contributed to the mild winter, preventing the usual dense fog formation, particularly in the latter half of the month.

On January 31, Delhi’s minimum temperature was 9.5°C, which was one degree above normal. The coldest temperature of the month was recorded on January 28 at 5.6°C. Interestingly, the coldest day was January 1, with a maximum of just 15°C.

Despite the warm temperatures, there was a slight improvement in Delhi’s air quality, thanks to the warmer weather, which helps disperse pollutants. The average Air Quality Index (AQI) for January stood at 305, the cleanest since 2022 when it was 279. However, air quality remained poor, with an AQI of 351 (very poor) recorded on January 31. Forecasts suggest that Delhi’s air quality will remain in the ‘very poor’ category until February 3, with slight improvements expected thereafter.
