Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday termed the now-suspended Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan as the “most unfair document” for the people of the Union Territory, stating that it never had their support. His remarks came after India suspended the World Bank-brokered 1960 water-sharing agreement in response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.

Abdullah addressed the Centre’s decision during a meeting with representatives from tourism, trade, and industry bodies amid concerns over a possible tourist exodus from the region.

“The Government of India has taken some steps. As far as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, let’s be honest, we have never been in favour of the Indus Waters Treaty. Now, what the medium to long-term implications of this are, that is something we have to wait to see,” Abdullah said.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair a high-level meeting on the treaty at his residence in New Delhi later today. Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Paatil and other senior officials are expected to attend.

The suspension of the treaty marks a significant escalation in India’s response to cross-border terrorism, signaling a tougher stance on Pakistan.
