New York: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has highlighted India’s potential role in resolving international conflicts, speaking on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Responding to a query by ANI on India’s contribution to addressing ongoing wars, Meloni stated, “I think it can play a very important role.”

Her remarks come weeks after a telephone conversation between PM Narendra Modi and PM Meloni, during which the two leaders discussed pressing global and regional issues. Both leaders emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, with PM Modi reaffirming India’s full support for diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war.

During the discussion, they reviewed the India-Italy Strategic Partnership, which encompasses investment, defence, security, space, science and technology, education, counter-terrorism, and people-to-people ties. They also reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the partnership under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29.

PM Meloni reiterated Italy’s support for the early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and expressed confidence in the success of the AI Impact Summit, which India will host in 2026. Both leaders also agreed to enhance collaboration under the India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC) initiative and pledged to remain in close contact on future steps.

The high-level debate of the 80th UNGA session began on Tuesday in New York, bringing together global leaders to discuss urgent international challenges. Discussions were dominated by ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine, as well as increasing Western recognition of Palestinian statehood. This year’s theme is “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights.”

The Russia-Ukraine war, now in its third year, continues to cause heavy casualties and destruction on both sides. Russia has intensified missile and drone strikes targeting Ukrainian cities, causing civilian deaths, infrastructure damage, and power outages. Ukraine has responded with drone attacks deep inside Russian territory, particularly targeting oil refineries and energy facilities, affecting Russia’s fuel exports and global markets. The frontlines in eastern and southern Ukraine remain fiercely contested, with no decisive gains for either side. Internationally, the conflict has drawn sharp condemnation, with Western nations providing military aid to Ukraine while Russia accuses NATO of prolonging the war.
