Iran Rejects Direct US Talks, Turns to Pakistan for Mediation Amid Rising Diplomatic Efforts

Iran has ruled out direct talks with the United States for the time being and has instead chosen Pakistan as an intermediary to communicate its position to Washington. The move signals renewed diplomatic engagement in the region even as formal negotiations between Tehran and Washington remain stalled.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Islamabad on Friday with a senior delegation, where he is expected to hold key meetings with top Pakistani officials as part of efforts to ease tensions between Iran and the US.

Pakistan Welcomes Iranian Delegation with High-Level Reception

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed Abbas Araghchi and the Iranian delegation at the airport. He was joined by Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, underlining the importance Islamabad is placing on the diplomatic mission.

Dar later shared visuals of the reception on social media, highlighting Pakistan’s active role in facilitating communication between Tehran and Washington amid heightened regional tensions.

Iran Rules Out Direct Talks with Washington

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that no direct meeting between Iranian and American officials is scheduled during the Islamabad visit.

According to Baqaei, Tehran will communicate its concerns and diplomatic stance to Washington through Pakistan, describing the initiative as part of Iran’s effort to resist what it called an “American-imposed war of aggression.”

This approach suggests that while Iran remains unwilling to engage directly with the US, it is leaving the door open for indirect negotiations through trusted regional partners.

Islamabad Steps Up Mediation Efforts

Abbas Araghchi is expected to meet several senior Pakistani officials during his visit. These discussions are viewed as part of Islamabad’s wider effort to reduce regional tensions and reopen diplomatic channels between Iran and the United States.

Pakistan’s involvement places the country at the center of a sensitive diplomatic process at a time when regional stability remains fragile.

US Sends Envoys to Pakistan for Indirect Diplomacy

The United States has also intensified diplomatic outreach. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump has sent Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan for talks.

According to Leavitt, the meetings will be “intermediated by the Pakistanis,” confirming Pakistan’s growing role as a mediator between the two adversaries.

The parallel diplomatic efforts by Iran and the United States indicate that, despite the absence of direct talks, both sides are seeking channels to manage tensions through Pakistan.

Why Pakistan Is Emerging as the Key Diplomatic Bridge

Pakistan’s simultaneous engagement with both Tehran and Washington reflects its strategic significance in the current geopolitical climate. By hosting Iranian officials while facilitating US diplomatic outreach, Islamabad is positioning itself as a critical bridge for indirect dialogue.
