Sisodia Holds Emergency Meeting with Kejriwal
The Aam Aadmi Party is facing one of its biggest political crises after senior leader Manish Sisodia rushed to meet party convenor Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi following the resignation of seven Rajya Sabha MPs.
Soon after returning from Gujarat, Sisodia went directly from the airport to Kejriwal’s residence, where the two leaders held urgent discussions over the impact of the defections and the party’s future course. “After returning to Delhi late at night, Sisodia went straight from the airport to the residence of party convenor Arvind Kejriwal. The two leaders met for more than half an hour. During the meeting, they also discussed the possible impact of the split and what the future strategy should be,” ANI quoted AAP sources as saying.
Seven Rajya Sabha MPs Defect to BJP
In a major setback for AAP, seven Rajya Sabha MPs — Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajendra Gupta, Vikram Sahney and Swati Maliwal — have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
AAP Considers Anti-Defection Action
The party has described the defections as a “betrayal of Punjab” and accused the BJP of using central agencies to break the party. AAP is now considering legal action against the rebel MPs under anti-defection laws.
Party chief whip N. D. Gupta may write to Rajya Sabha Chairperson C. P. Radhakrishnan seeking action against three MPs who were publicly seen joining the BJP. “Gupta’s letter will seek action as per the anti-defection law. These 3 leaders were seen in public joining the BJP. Rest four were not seen in the public domain, making that move. Hence, the chief whip will lodge the complaint against the three MPs seen in the BJP office,” AAP sources told ANI.
Punjab Poll Plans Face Major Blow
The political crisis comes at a crucial time for AAP as it prepares for Assembly elections in Punjab, Goa and Gujarat next year. Leaders such as Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak played an important role in expanding the party’s base in Punjab.
Their departure creates a major organisational vacuum and raises fresh doubts over AAP’s ability to sustain its expansion strategy in the coming elections.
Party’s National Expansion Under Pressure
The emergency meeting between Sisodia and Kejriwal reflects the seriousness of the crisis. With the party’s Rajya Sabha numbers reduced and several senior leaders gone, AAP now faces growing pressure to protect its position and prevent further damage.
