TMC Scores Big Win In West Bengal Bar Council Polls, Secures 15 Of 23 Seats Despite Assembly Election Setback

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has secured a strong victory in the West Bengal Bar Council elections, winning 15 of the 23 elected seats and retaining its influence over the lawyers’ body.

The result comes at a significant time for the party, which suffered a major political setback in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The Bar Council outcome gives the TMC some relief and indicates that the party continues to have support among a section of the state’s legal community.

TMC Wins 15 Seats, BJP Gets 3

A total of 23 seats were decided through elections.

The TMC won the largest share with 15 seats, while the BJP secured three. The Left Front also won three seats and the Congress managed to retain two.

Five of the 23 elected positions were reserved for women. The TMC won four of these seats, while Congress secured one.

The BJP’s tally remained unchanged compared with the previous election, while the Left Front lost one seat, falling from four to three.

75 Candidates Were In The Race

The election saw 75 candidates competing for the 23 elected positions.

The TMC contested all 23 seats, while the BJP fielded 22 candidates. The Left Front had 12 candidates and another 18 candidates contested independently.

Several prominent TMC-backed lawyers emerged victorious, including Subhashis Chakraborty, Baisanor Chatterjee, Ansar Mondal, Ashok Deb, Indranil Basu and Siddhartha Mukherjee.

Subhashis Chakraborty, associated with the TMC lawyers’ cell, reportedly recorded the largest winning margin among the successful candidates.

Four Of Five Women’s Seats Go To TMC

Women’s representation was another important feature of this year’s election.

Five seats were reserved for women under the new arrangement. The TMC won four of these positions, giving the party a significant share of the reserved representation.

The Bar Council of India is also expected to nominate two additional women members from among the female candidates in accordance with Supreme Court directions.

Once these nominations are made, the total strength of the West Bengal Bar Council will increase from 23 elected members to 25 members.

Why The Result Matters For TMC

The result is politically significant because it comes after a difficult period for the TMC.

The party has faced political challenges following the Assembly elections, including defections, internal disputes, legal cases and allegations from political opponents.

Despite those setbacks, the Bar Council result shows that the TMC continues to maintain an organisational presence among practising lawyers in the state.

The election involved practising advocates from district courts across West Bengal, giving the result a broad geographical base.

TMC Expected To Form New Bar Council Board

Voting for the Bar Council election began on March 9, shortly before the Assembly elections.

With the results now announced, the TMC is expected to play the leading role in forming the new board of the West Bengal Bar Council.

For the party, the victory provides a political boost at a time when it is attempting to rebuild its organisation and strengthen its presence across different sections of West Bengal society.

While the Bar Council election cannot directly be compared with a state Assembly election, the TMC’s strong performance gives the party a reason to claim that its influence among sections of the legal fraternity remains intact.
