IMD issues red alert, forecasts extremely heavy rains in Mumbai, Pune, and Thane for next two days

BMC activates disaster management measures in city as Weather Bureau forecasts extremely heavy showers in MMR and Pune for the next two days.

Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alert forecasting extremely heavy rains with gusty winds in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Raigad rainfall over the next two days on August 4 and 5. In a note on its website, the IMD forecast a cyclonic circulation off North Maharashtra coast leading to strengthening of South West monsoons over Arabian Sea due to increase in North-South pressure gradient and strengthening of winds.

The IMD also warned fishermen not to venture into the sea, in its website.   Following the alert, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) immediately activated the standard operation protocols as part of the Disaster Management measures to deal with the situation. The BMC appealed citizens to stay off the coastal and water logged areas. Three teams of the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) have already been stationed in the city to deal with emergencies. 

Control rooms in wards have been asked to be high alert and gear up with stocks and manpower for emergencies.  As part of the Disaster Management protocol, the BMC has activated its six pumping stations and has stationed temporary pumps at 299 flooding spots with necessary fuel. The city Fire Brigade’s flood rescue teams have been stationed at six centers across the city.

The India Coastguard, Navy and other departments too have been alerted about the weather department warning and asked to be on standby in case of emergencies. The BMC has also made arrangements to relocate residents staying alongside Mithi river, in case of heavy flooding there.  Schools have also been kept on standby to accommodate those affected by heavy flooding.
