“I Want to Fight My Own Case”: Muskan Rastogi Seeks Law Degree from Jail to Defend Herself in Husband’s Murder Case

Meerut: In a dramatic turn in the high-profile murder case of a former merchant navy officer, 28-year-old Muskan Rastogi, currently lodged in Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail, has approached jail authorities seeking permission to pursue legal studies so she can represent herself in court.

According to a report by The Times of India, Rastogi expressed deep dissatisfaction with her legal representation and conveyed her intent to argue her own case.

“She expressed dissatisfaction with the support she received from her lawyer and stated her intention to argue her own case,” a jail official told TOI.

Muskan and her husband were arrested following their return from a trip to Himachal Pradesh, after which their bail applications were rejected. They are both under judicial custody in Meerut.

However, Rastogi’s desire to study law comes with major hurdles. Jail authorities confirmed that she has only studied up to Class 8 and does not possess a senior secondary certificate—a mandatory qualification to enroll in a law program in India.

“Muskan has not studied beyond Class 8 and lacks a senior secondary certificate, which is a mandatory requirement for pursuing legal studies in India,” the official added.

Despite this, the authorities have begun exploring pathways to help her fulfill her educational aspirations. IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) offers educational programs within the prison system, and jail officials are considering enrolling her through this channel so she can first complete her school-level education.

Jail Superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma told The Times of India, “Since Muskan was lodged in jail, no one from her family has visited her, while Sahil’s maternal grandma and brother met him. Now, Muskan has sought the process to study legal education and we are thinking about it. If she wants to study, jail authorities will provide all necessary resources to her.”
