Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Hemant Soren was sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on Thursday, marking his fourth term in office. The swearing-in ceremony, held at Ranchi’s Morabadi Ground, saw a strong show of unity from opposition leaders under the INDIA bloc.
Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar administered the oath of office and secrecy to the 49-year-old tribal leader in a grand ceremony. Key political figures in attendance included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, among others.
Dressed in a traditional kurta and pyjama, Hemant Soren began his day with a visit to JMM patriarch and his father, Shibu Soren, underscoring the familial and political legacy of the party.
Soren’s return to power comes amidst significant political challenges in the state, with an emphasis on tribal welfare and sustainable development taking center stage during his previous terms.
The presence of prominent INDIA bloc leaders highlighted the larger opposition’s effort to showcase unity ahead of the 2024 general elections. Speaking on the occasion, a senior Congress leader remarked, “This is a moment of pride for the entire state, and the opposition stands united in our commitment to work for the people of India.”
This marks Soren’s continued dominance in Jharkhand politics, with his party enjoying considerable support in the tribal heartland. As he embarks on his fourth term, all eyes will be on the JMM leader to deliver on his promises and navigate the complexities of state governance while maintaining a critical role in national politics.
