The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is set to convene on November 29 to analyze the party’s lackluster performance in the recently concluded Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections. The meeting will also address the broader political landscape as the party prepares for upcoming electoral battles.
In Maharashtra, the Congress faced a significant setback as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction). Despite contesting 101 seats under the seat-sharing arrangement, Congress managed to secure only 16 seats. The Shiv Sena (UBT) won 20 seats, while the NCP (SP) bagged just 10. The results have raised concerns about the alliance’s effectiveness and Congress’s ability to lead it in the state.
The situation in Haryana was equally challenging for the Congress. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious, forming its third consecutive government with 48 seats in the 90-member assembly. Congress, which contested all seats, secured 37—a performance seen as below expectations in a state where the party hoped to make significant inroads.
Senior Congress leaders are expected to deliberate on the reasons behind these electoral outcomes. A party insider shared, “The results in both states have been disappointing. The meeting will focus on identifying the gaps in strategy and organization that led to these results.”
The CWC is likely to also discuss organizational restructuring, candidate selection processes, and the effectiveness of alliances as it prepares for upcoming state and national elections. The meeting comes at a crucial time as the party seeks to rejuvenate its base and build momentum under the larger opposition INDIA bloc ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Congress supporters and political analysts will keenly watch for any major decisions or announcements emerging from the November 29 meeting.
