Chandigarh: The winter session of the Haryana Assembly began on a stormy note on Thursday, with the Congress moving a no-confidence motion against the BJP-led state government and triggering sharp exchanges inside the House. The opposition targeted the ruling dispensation over alleged “vote theft,” rising unemployment, and a deteriorating law and order situation, setting the stage for an intense political debate.

The no-confidence motion, scheduled for discussion on Friday, comes amid a politically charged atmosphere in the 90-member Assembly, where the BJP holds a simple majority with 48 MLAs. The Congress has 37 members, while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has two legislators and three seats are held by Independents.

In its motion, the Congress accused the BJP government of losing the confidence of people across all sections of society, alleging that its policies have failed to address core public concerns. The opposition highlighted what it described as a steady decline in law and order, pointing to incidents of murder, abduction, robbery and sexual crimes. The Congress also referred to recent suicides of senior police officers, raising questions about systemic pressure and administrative stress within the force.

Unemployment emerged as another major focus of the motion. Congress leaders claimed that lack of job opportunities has forced educated youth to migrate illegally abroad, often at great personal risk. The issue of repeated examination paper leaks in recruitment for government jobs was also raised, with the opposition alleging that such incidents have eroded trust in the system and shattered the aspirations of young candidates.

The Congress further drew attention to infrastructure and safety lapses, citing the deaths of two young basketball players in Rohtak and Jhajjar districts after basketball poles collapsed at sports facilities. The incident was described as a result of poor maintenance and administrative negligence.

Agricultural distress also featured prominently in the motion, with opposition members flagging problems such as waterlogging in farmlands and shortages of fertilisers, which they said have added to farmers’ hardships.
