Srinagar: In a significant step towards digital policing, police station Vilgam in Handwara has registered its first electronic First Information Report (e-FIR) based on a complaint lodged via WhatsApp. This marks a new era in law enforcement, utilizing technology for swift and efficient grievance redressal.

The complaint was filed by Imtiyaz Ahmad Dar, son of Mohammad Assadullah Dar, a resident of Hanjipora, Kupwara, and the driver of SRTC bus no. JK01Y-1121. According to the complaint, the incident took place on February 22 while he was traveling from Tarathpora to Srinagar.

Upon reaching Vilgam, he was allegedly restrained and physically assaulted by two individuals – Ashiq Hussain Bhat and Gowher Ahmad Bhat, both sons of Samad Bhat and residents of Shehnipora, Vilgam. The assault reportedly resulted in physical injuries to the complainant.

Acting swiftly, Police Station Vilgam registered the e-FIR under FIR No. 09/2025, invoking Sections 115(2) and 126(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The prompt registration of the case underscores the Handwara police’s commitment to leveraging digital platforms to ensure timely justice.

This milestone sets a precedent for the increasing integration of technology in law enforcement, paving the way for more accessible and efficient justice delivery mechanisms in the region. The adoption of digital tools such as WhatsApp for filing complaints reflects a progressive shift in policing, enhancing accessibility and responsiveness to public grievances.
